Woolloomooloo, A Restoration Project

Update: Woolloomooloo – a Restoration Project 13 October 2025
The project fundraising has raised $11,275 so far from 55 supporters.

Pat went down to Canberra for 5 days to look through all the remaining original footage to find some other footage that may take place of the few shots that are overblown from aging footage. There were about 7 rolls of film to scan from that trip.
I have had to extend the dates as we are waiting for footage I chose from the NFSA to go through the NFSA process.
Next week, I will get back into the fundraising and send thank you emails to the donors. I will also send emails to Documentary Australia to be sent out to anonymous donors.

As soon as we get the footage from the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), it will be scanned and Ray and I can go through it to see what we can use to replace the blown-out footage.
There are some drawings that are blown out as well so will contact one of the artists who was involved in the drawings, cartoons and illustrations who will be able to enhance the very light drawings, so they are like they were at the beginning in 1978.

Woolloomooloo has been on hold as ‘For All the World to See’ Restoration took longer than I thought. But I have been speaking to people about the Restoration of Woolloomooloo such as Professor Kurt Iveson* at Sydney University about fundraising for Woolloomooloo by having screenings of Rocking the Foundations with Q&As. Peter Rees who has written a book about Juanita’s disappearance at the time, is writing another one (coming out early next year) and we are discussing ways of fundraising too. I will contact people associated with Woolloomooloo housing, businesses and organisations housed there and in Victoria Street.

I have been speaking to Meredith Burgmann; Ian Milliss; Judy Mundey; Wendy Bacon etc who were active in the early 1970s; about possible ways of raising money.

I will now put the Project up on the site and proceed with fundraising. I have been in touch with the NFSA and started the process of obtaining the material that Ray needs to start the restoration work. Since there isn’t much time left this year, Ray will start in the new year.

*Kurt Iveson is a Professor of Urban Geography in the School of Geosciences. As an urban geographer, he works to understand the processes that shape urban life, and to figure out how we can democratise those processes to make more equitable and sustainable cities. He has also been collecting material about the BLF and Green Bans – photos, articles, etc.
